Synopsis:

Ke Bu considers himself a perfectly ordinary person. He is practical, sharp-tongued, shameless when the situation calls for it, and painfully aware of his own shortcomings. Zhi Li, on the other hand, seems anything but ordinary. Unreasonably handsome, indifferent to almost everything around him, lazy when he has no reason to exert himself, and impossible to read, Zhi Li moves through life as though the rules governing everyone else simply do not apply to him.

Yet somehow, Ke Bu becomes the exception.

Their connection began long before either of them fully understood what it would become. By the time they are together at Sheng Jie Academy, Ke Bu has already found himself thoroughly entangled with a man who rarely explains what he feels, almost never behaves the way a normal boyfriend should, and has an alarming habit of responding to perfectly reasonable questions with answers capable of driving Ke Bu insane.

Zhi Li may not speak the language of romance very well, but his actions tell a different story. Little by little, Ke Bu discovers that beneath Zhi Li’s cold expression and apparent indifference is someone fiercely possessive, quietly attentive, and far more attached than he ever admits. Surrounding them is a spectacularly dysfunctional group of friends whose idea of friendship involves humiliating challenges, elaborate pranks, surveillance cameras, cross-dressing, public embarrassment, terrible advice, and occasionally risking their lives for one another. Add Zhi Li’s terrifyingly unconventional family, Ke Bu’s complicated relationship with his divorced parents, jealous classmates, love rivals, school competitions, vacations, birthdays, misunderstandings, and one increasingly infamous Black-and-Red Notebook, and ordinary university life never really stood a chance.

Behind the absurd comedy, however, Ke Bu carries an old fear that has followed him since his parents’ divorce: the fear of being left behind. He wants desperately to believe that happiness can last, yet part of him is always waiting for it to disappear. Loving Zhi Li forces him to confront not only that insecurity, but questions of family, acceptance, self-worth, and whether he can choose his own happiness even when the people he loves do not understand it.

Zhi Li faces those questions very differently. Other people’s opinions mean almost nothing to him. To Zhi Li, once he has decided that something—or someone—belongs in his life, the matter is essentially settled. Yet loving Ke Bu gradually asks something even of him: to show what he feels, to reassure someone who cannot always believe in permanence, and to step into conflicts he would normally consider beneath his notice simply because they matter to Ke Bu.

Their relationship is messy, ridiculous, possessive, argumentative, occasionally painful, and unexpectedly tender. They tease each other, manipulate each other, fight, reconcile, embarrass one another beyond recovery, and repeatedly discover that neither is particularly interested in becoming a better-behaved person.

They simply become better at loving each other.

At its heart, He Is Lord Zhi Li is the story of an ordinary young man who slowly discovers that, to one extraordinary person, he is anything but ordinary—and of a man who seems detached from the entire world discovering the one person he could never allow himself to miss.
