Synopsis

Seven years have passed since the summer when Ke Bu traded a 1.5-yuan popsicle for a boyfriend.

He and Zhi Li are now university students, and the strange relationship that began as an impulsive agreement between two lonely middle school boys has long since become something neither of them can dismiss as a joke.

Ke Bu once thought Zhi Li was like the protagonist of a story: impossibly handsome, inexplicable, detached from ordinary people, and surrounded by an aura that seemed to belong more naturally in fiction than reality.

He eventually realizes he had it backward. Zhi Li was never simply like the protagonist. Ke Bu wanted him to be the protagonist of his story.

But loving Zhi Li has never made understanding him any easier.

Zhi Li still says whatever he wants, ignores the rules everyone else seems to live by, expresses affection in ways that range from unexpectedly tender to completely infuriating, and answers perfectly reasonable questions with responses that make Ke Bu question why he ever started the conversation.

And Ke Bu, despite all his complaints, still cannot let go.

Book 2 returns to their chaotic university life with Zhang Luo, Ying Xiu Jie, Zhou Xin He, Chu Hao Yu, Gong Zhu, Su You Yan, and the rest of the people unfortunate enough to have become part of their strange little world. Ridiculous bets, terrible ideas, relationship problems, family complications, jealousy, friendship, growing up, and Zhi Li’s complete disregard for normal human behavior ensure that peace remains impossible.

Yet beneath the comedy, Ke Bu is changing. The boy who once believed life only needed to be bearable has discovered that he actually wants happiness. The person who expected everything good to disappear has somehow spent seven years holding on to the same man. And the relationship he once described as something existing only in name has become one of the few things in his life he refuses to surrender.

Zhi Li changes too, although, as always with Zhi Li, the changes are difficult to see unless you know where to look.

The deeper Ke Bu becomes entangled with Zhi Li, his family, and the strange logic by which he lives, the more he discovers that there are still parts of this man he has never understood. Some are ridiculous. Some are frightening. Some are unexpectedly gentle.

And some force Ke Bu to reconsider what it actually means to know another person.

Maybe loving someone does not mean being able to explain them. Maybe it means choosing them even when you cannot.

The entrance to the fairy tale is open again. Ke Bu already knows it might swallow him whole. He walks in anyway.
