ZL – Chapter 19: The Non-standard Answer

“So, that’s how it is.” Ke Bu announced this conclusion.

“You suddenly blurt out something with no context—of course nobody understands!!” No one would understand a statement thrown out like that the moment everyone gathered together. Chu Haoyu, however, understood perfectly well. He stepped forward and lifted Ke Bu’s shirt, exposing Zhi Li’s “battle results.” Nobody there was stupid. Since they were all people around Zhi Li, if even Gong Zhu had noticed it, how could they not understand? It was just that Zhi Li himself had never mentioned it, so everyone had tacitly chosen to pretend not to notice.

Ke Bu slapped Chu Haoyu’s hand away and tugged his shirt back down. No matter how thick-skinned Ke Bu was, he still knew shame. Gong Zhu stood before Ke Bu like a child who had done something wrong.

“I’m sorry about before. I couldn’t accept it at first, so I said some excessive things. I didn’t truly mean them.”

Ke Bu stroked his chin and fell silent for a moment.

“Don’t tell me you thought I’d hold your hand and say, ‘You did nothing wrong, we’re the best love rivals, let’s keep trying together, I don’t blame you, it’s all fate’s fault, destiny cannot be defied,’ and then we’d hug each other crying in the rain and form a deep friendship from then on? Dream on.”

Ke Bu punched Gong Zhu in the stomach.

“When it comes to men’s business, you solve it with men’s methods. My love story isn’t going down some harem route. If you keep having improper thoughts about Zhi Li, I’ll beat you up again. Got it?”

Gong Zhu clutched his stomach and crouched on the ground.

Zhi Li, meanwhile, sat nearby like a complete outsider watching the whole thing unfold.

“I seem pretty popular.”

“You realized that way too late!!!” Chu Haoyu said resentfully.

Gong Zhu nodded vigorously. Ke Bu reached out and pulled him back up. Gong Zhu smiled, his beautiful face softening.

“Thank you.”

“Don’t thank me. I wasn’t joking about beating you up.”

After the first internal conflict came to an end, Zhou Xinhe timidly pulled out fifty yuan from her bag and handed it to Ying Xiujie.

“Ke Bu, I thought you were a good child, so I bet with Xiujie that you would preserve your chastity your whole life and only have a Platonic relationship with Zhi Li. I didn’t expect Lord Zhi Li would so quickly…”

Because the following words were too explicit, Zhou Xinhe did not say them aloud. Compared to her innocence, Ke Bu was made to seem unbearably vulgar. Before Ke Bu could explode, Ying Xiujie also pulled out fifty yuan. Together with Zhou Xinhe’s money, he handed one hundred yuan to Chu Haoyu.

Ying Xiujie glared at Ke Bu.

“Ke Bu, if you’re a man, at least have a little restraint. You got topped way too fast! I bet on one month.”

Apparently Chu Haoyu’s bet with him had been for one hundred yuan. Yet Chu Haoyu showed no joy at winning. He also took out one hundred yuan from his bag, added it to the previous one hundred, and handed two hundred yuan to Su Youyan.

“Ke Bu, I’m honestly ashamed to share a dorm with you. I bet with Youyan on one week. Who would’ve thought? I seriously overestimated you. Disgusting. I despise you.”

Ke Bu finally snapped.

“What the hell is wrong with all of you!! You’re taking our private affairs and making bets out of them, then turning around and criticizing us! Zhi Li, this is the moment you should say something too! Look at how awful they are, they don’t respect us at all!”

The reason Ke Bu was so emotional was because they had hit the mark on the frustration buried deep in his heart. Did they think he wasn’t upset? The saddest person here was himself. Every time he recalled what happened yesterday, he only wanted to die.

Ke Bu turned around and discovered Su Youyan holding four hundred yuan out to Zhi Li. It had doubled again!!

She looked at Ke Bu sideways with utter disdain.

“I bet on three days. You couldn’t even last that long. So desperate.”

Ke Bu stared at the ultimate winner—Zhi Li—in disbelief, his trembling finger pointing at him.

“Can you tell me why Youyan is giving you money? And why you’re acting like this about it?”

“What?”

“No, no, answer me honestly.”

“What?”

“Zhi Li, I don’t want to live anymore. You come die with me.”

As he said this, he lunged forward, intending to fight Zhi Li to the death. But suddenly, a tearing pain shot through his backside. Zhi Li wore an innocent expression like a pure, naïve child.

“You shouldn’t move around too much. I just fucked your ass last night.”

Ke Bu covered his ears.

“I can’t hear anything. I can’t hear anything at all.”

Zhi Li removed Ke Bu’s hands from his ears.

“You shouldn’t move around too much. I just fucked your ass last night.”

“You don’t need to repeat it!!”

“I thought you didn’t hear me.”

“You did that on purpose, didn’t you? Don’t make that face—it’s insulting the word ‘innocent.’ Does your dictionary not contain the word ‘embarrassment’? You can say stuff like that without even blushing or your heart racing!”

“What stuff? Does ‘ass’ require blushing and a racing heartbeat?”

Ke Bu covered Zhi Li’s mouth.

“I’m sorry, I was wrong, Lord Zhi Li. You’re absolutely right to use my body for betting however you want. I shouldn’t have questioned you. I should silently support you from behind. Go for it, please continue using my body for gambling. Ganbatte~~”

Ke Bu’s lack of self-control caused everyone to lose money. Zhi Li placed the four hundred yuan on the table and looked at Gong Zhu.

“Take it and buy a birthday cake.”

Gong Zhu opened his mouth, deeply moved. Even though he had done something excessive in a moment of impulse and said hurtful things, neither Zhi Li nor Ke Bu had come to resent him because of it. So this was friendship—real friendship.

With tears in his eyes, Gong Zhu said, “Thank you, truly, thank you very much. Lord Zhi Li, if you don’t mind, let me stay by your side as a backup tire for the rest of my life. As long as Ke Bu is still alive, I absolutely won’t harbor any improper thoughts. I’ll wait until the day Ke Bu dies.”

“I refuse to die!!” Ke Bu gritted his teeth, though inwardly he felt somewhat startled. He had thought Zhi Li was the type with coarse nerves, yet he actually noticed these things. Although neither of them truly owed Gong Zhu anything, if he thought about the incident from another angle, it really had been quite a blow to him. There was nothing wrong with liking someone.

Ke Bu carefully studied Zhi Li’s expressionless face. What kind of magic did this guy possess, that people so easily wanted to stay by his side?

Chu Haoyu sighed.

“Ke Bu really is cunning. Knowing he’d only drag everyone down, he found the biggest backer possible. What a petty villain. Doing such shameless things.”

“You flatter me. My shamelessness can’t compare to your brain.”

“Tsk tsk, look at that villainous face of his.” Chu Haoyu turned to Zhi Li. “Seriously, what exactly do you even like about Ke Bu?”

The moment the question was asked, it became the hottest topic. Ke Bu casually looked at Zhi Li, but inside, his nerves tightened again and again. It seemed he had never actually asked Zhi Li this question before.

Zhi Li thought about it.

Then thought some more.

Then thought even longer.

“What’s with thinking this long!! Can’t you think of even a single good point about me?!!” Ke Bu shouted.

In the end, even after everyone dispersed, the question still remained unanswered. Ke Bu was so troubled he could not even focus in class. The moment class ended, he rushed over to Zhi Li’s desk and stared at him seriously.

“Don’t think I’m being naggy. There’s only one question: what exactly do you like about me?”

“You’ve really stumped me,” Zhi Li admitted honestly.

“Then think about it!”

Who forces someone to think about a question like this?

“Isn’t your skin way too thick?”

“I’ve already thrown caution to the wind!!” Being told that really did make him feel somewhat ashamed.

Zhi Li propped one side of his face with one hand while the other casually spun a pen. He lifted his eyelids slightly.

“Cute, beautiful, gentle, considerate, shy, charming, pure.”

“Are you mocking me?!!”

Seeing the vicious glare in Ke Bu’s eyes, Zhi Li stopped spinning the pen.

“What do you like about me?”

“Don’t ask something like that with a completely blank face!! I like every part of you—that’s the standard answer.”

Even though he said it this way, Ke Bu still could not help feeling embarrassed. Yet even after hearing those words, Zhi Li remained expressionless. This person—whether listening to himself or to others—had far too few facial expressions!

“I can’t think of what exactly I like about you.”

The moment Zhi Li said that, Ke Bu was just about to retort when Zhi Li continued:

“But I just like you.”

Ke Bu froze, his expression stiffening on his face.

“Y-your answer… it’s totally not a standard answer!”

After saying that, he returned to his seat.

Yet this imperfect, non-standard answer quietly changed the shape of Ke Bu’s lips into a smile.
