ZL – Chapter 2: So That’s How It Is

When life truly becomes miserable, it is when misfortune comes in relentless waves, one after another. On his way to the new classroom, Ke Bu once again witnessed Zhi Li’s wretched nature. In the stairwell, Zhi Li sat casually atop the handrail, looking utterly at ease, while a girl stood in front of him. Ke Bu hid himself at the corner. Just what about this guy makes him so popular? It’s only the first day of school, and something this unrealistic is already happening.

“I like you.” The girl confessed boldly.

“But I like boys.” Zhi Li replied without the slightest change in expression. The girl fled as if escaping. Just as Ke Bu was about to step out, another boy appeared, standing before Zhi Li.

“I like you.” The boy confessed just as boldly.

“But I like girls.” There it was—this despicable man, casually trampling on others’ feelings, telling lies as though they were nothing. Most infuriating of all, even Ke Bu, who prided himself on judging people accurately, was completely deceived. There wasn’t the slightest flaw on Zhi Li’s face.

How pitiful. Do they really think that at the start of school, on a clear day, standing on a campus strewn with falling leaves, all it takes is blushing and saying “Senior, I like you,” for the two of them to embrace tearfully? Stop dreaming. This is reality. In the end, most people just settle for someone at random, spend their days clinging to a computer, and live a decadent life. That’s the ultimate destination of university. If anyone is to blame, it’s their own naivety—and the fact that they fell for Zhi Li. This man is the embodiment of reality: a destroyer of fantasies.

Ke Bu stepped out and spat in disdain. “There isn’t a single word in this world that can fully describe just how vile you are.”

“A voyeur has no right to judge me.”

“So what if I was watching you?” Ke Bu retorted confidently—yet there was someone even more shameless.

“Then do I look good?” Zhi Li said it expressionlessly, uttering such brazen words without a trace of embarrassment.

“Don’t ask questions that can be so easily misunderstood!!”

“What are you misunderstanding?”

Playing dumb. He’s definitely playing dumb. A seemingly harmless yet scheming man… Even someone as sharp as Ke Bu had fallen into his verbal trap, which left him somewhat irritated.

Zhi Li jumped down from the railing and walked straight toward the classroom—the very same classroom Ke Bu belonged to. Ke Bu gritted his teeth. So this is what cruel reality looks like? He casually found a seat and sat down. Not far diagonally ahead, Zhi Li seemed to be seriously flipping through the freshman handbook.

Chu Hao Yu approached and stood beside him. “Zhi Li, so you’re here! I’ve been looking for you everywhere. By the way, did you notice anything different about me today?”

Ke Bu frowned in disgust. Here we go again—that pervert. Zhi Li didn’t even raise his eyes, while Chu Hao Yu spoke excitedly, “I’m not wearing underwear today.”

How can someone say something that shameless out loud…

Zhi Li tilted his head slightly and looked at Chu Hao Yu’s lower body. After five seconds, he reached out and pulled down Chu Hao Yu’s pants. Several girls screamed and covered their eyes. Only Zhi Li remained calm. “So you really aren’t wearing any.” Then he continued reading the handbook.

Flustered, Chu Hao Yu hurriedly pulled his pants back up and shouted angrily, “Zhi Li!!” At that moment, the homeroom teacher entered amidst the chaos, carrying a large stack of materials. She was a woman in her thirties, dressed in a maroon suit that could not conceal her mature charm. After delivering a long string of official remarks, she instructed everyone to gather in the auditorium for the opening ceremony.

Ke Bu followed behind the crowd. The grand hall was packed to capacity, and he stood with his class.

“Ke Bu?”

Ke Bu turned around. It was Gong Zhu; he was actually in the same class as him, yet Ke Bu hadn’t noticed at all.

“Oh, it’s you.” After the principal finished his long-winded speech, a man in a suit stepped onto the stage. “Now, we invite the freshman representative, Zhi Li, to speak.”

“Z-Zhi Li… is the freshman representative? My Lord Zhi Li…,” Gong Zhu murmured softly. Since when did he become yours? Ke Bu glanced toward the back, where Zhi Li was standing, as if he hadn’t heard anything at all. The man in the suit raised his voice again into the microphone. “Zhi Li!”

“What?” Zhi Li responded from within the crowd, utterly unmoved.

“Zhi Li, it’s your turn to come on stage.”

“What?”

“Zhi Li!!”

“What?”

Ke Bu could no longer hold back and shouted loudly, “If you don’t want to go up, just say so!! Stop using that trick to brush people off, Zhi Li!”

In the now-silent hall, only Ke Bu’s voice echoed. Realizing something, he shrank back into himself. In the end, Zhi Li did not go on stage, and the freshman representative was replaced by someone else.

Behind him, Gong Zhu spoke in a low voice, “Hey, Ke Bu… is it just my imagination, or do you seem to care more about Zhi Li’s matters than others’…?”

“More what?”

“It’s hard to describe… but don’t tell me you also—”

“Y-you, you, you—don’t continue!” Now it was Ke Bu who felt at a loss. “It’s definitely not what you’re thinking! It’s just that I feel like I can’t leave that guy alone. Otherwise… otherwise he’ll definitely ruin my peaceful campus life.” Yes, that must be it.

“Leave him alone? I didn’t expect someone as detached from worldly affairs as you to care so much about Lord Zhi Li, whom you’ve only known for a day. Seems I was wrong—you’re actually a kind person.”

Ke Bu looked at Gong Zhu’s innocent face. This guy is definitely an idiot… though, I guess he’s the type men would like—considerate, kind, and good-looking. Even though he’s a man, his slender build makes people want to protect him… But Ke Bu only felt the urge to crush that pitiful, lovable quality. This type is such a waste on a man.

“When did I ever say I only met Zhi Li today?” Ke Bu said something shocking. Gong Zhu froze for a moment, unable to react, and Ke Bu continued, “He and I were middle school classmates—and, unfortunately, high school classmates too.”

“What?!!!” Gong Zhu stared at Ke Bu in disbelief. “Why didn’t you say so earlier? Then… are you two very close?”

“We just went to the same school. We didn’t really talk much.”

“Then you must understand Lord Zhi Li quite well?” Gong Zhu suddenly became interested.

“Not at all!!” Ke Bu denied quickly. “I just know some habits that everyone knows. Like just now—that was his way of mechanically repeating things to brush people off when he doesn’t want to deal with them. It’s seriously infuriating to listen to.”

“Then, Ke Bu… can you introduce me to him?”

“No.”
