Synopsis
Gongsun E spent his previous life earning a reputation as an upright investigator, a formidable political figure, and eventually an emperor. Yet the victory he believed he had won concealed a devastating mistake. Wei Xiao, the feared chief eunuch he had long treated as his greatest adversary, died condemned as a villain. Only afterward did Gongsun E discover how much Wei Xiao had sacrificed for him, and how completely he had misunderstood the man behind the ruthless reputation.
Given an unexpected return to the past, Gongsun E resolves to change that ending. He knows the court’s dangerous factions, the catastrophes still to come, and the cost of trusting the wrong people. But foreknowledge alone cannot protect Wei Xiao, whose position makes him indispensable to the empire and a target for anyone seeking power. Saving him will require more than a confession of regret. It will require Gongsun E to confront the political machinery that destroyed them both.
Wei Xiao is no helpless figure awaiting rescue. As the chief of the Eastern Depot, he controls a feared intelligence apparatus and moves through the imperial court with a composure that can silence even experienced officials. His brutal ascent has left scars that power cannot erase, and his guarded feelings for Gongsun E are entangled with years of rivalry. When his old opponent begins offering assistance instead of hostility, Wei Xiao has every reason to suspect an ulterior motive.
A suspicious fire, a merchant family’s apparent ruin, and missing salt-tax silver pull the two men into an investigation with consequences far beyond a single household. Corrupt officials, concealed evidence, and competing interests force them into the same dangerous orbit. Gongsun E’s knowledge of a life already lived becomes an advantage, but every move risks exposing intentions he can hardly explain. Their uneasy cooperation turns each meeting into a contest of sharp instincts, hidden loyalties, and feelings neither fully trusts.
Beneath the struggle for influence lies a quieter, more difficult undertaking: learning whether tenderness can survive betrayal, shame, and the habits of suspicion. Gongsun E wants to give Wei Xiao a future in which he is neither sacrificed nor erased by history. Wei Xiao, accustomed to being feared rather than cherished, cannot easily believe such a future exists. Between the shadows of the imperial court and the possibility of a second chance, two dangerous men must decide whether the past is a sentence or something they can finally rewrite.
