Synopsis

After dying in his first life, He Yi wakes again in an unfamiliar ancient dynasty, occupying the body of a young farmer who has just died alone in a dilapidated hut in the mountains. Weak, penniless, and supposedly suffering from an epidemic, He Yi has little choice but to begin his second life with whatever he can find: a handful of grain, wild plants, a stream full of fish, and the practical knowledge he carried with him from the modern world.

Then someone starts leaving food for him. A rabbit appears beside his bed. A pheasant turns up inside his hut. And somewhere beyond the window, a huge black-and-white spotted tail keeps disappearing into the forest. Before long, He Yi also encounters Xue Ci, a beautiful and decidedly strange young man who speaks an unfamiliar language, knows almost nothing about ordinary human life, and possesses an alarming appetite. Between teaching Xue Ci how to wear clothes and cook his food instead of eating the skewer, He Yi gradually realizes that neither his mysterious new companion nor the enormous snow leopard roaming the mountains is quite what they seem.

As He Yi rebuilds his life, survival slowly turns into living. He plants fields, raises animals, fishes and hunts, experiments with food, earns money, deals with troublesome relatives, and works toward building a home of his own. Through changing seasons, village disputes, harvests, unexpected dangers, and periods of separation, Xue Ci quietly becomes part of everything He Yi is building.

What begins as a second chance at life becomes the story of two people learning how to belong beside one another: one human trying to put down roots in an unfamiliar age, and one snow leopard learning what it means to share a human home. Their life is not grand or world-shaking. It is made from planted fields, warm meals, muddy paws, a slowly rising house, and the person waiting there when the day’s work is done.
