Synopsis

Zhou Ruo An and Lin Yi grew up on the wrong side of respectability, in a world of poverty, street fights, scams, cheap cigarettes, and deals best left unexplained. Clever, shameless, and fiercely ambitious, Zhou Ruo An has never cared much about being a good person. Lin Yi, who has survived beside him through the ugliest years of their lives, is hardly better. Whatever their relationship is, neither has ever needed to give it a respectable name.

Everything changes when Zhou Ruo An is taken into the wealthy and powerful Zhou family as its supposedly long-lost young master. The boy from the urban village disappears beneath tailored suits and a new identity, only to discover that privilege comes with another kind of brutality. Behind the Zhou family’s polished doors lies a war over legitimacy, inheritance, money, and power, and Zhou Ruo An proves disturbingly well suited to it. If climbing higher requires lies, manipulation, blackmail, or betrayal, he is willing to pay the price.

There is only one piece of his old life he cannot cleanly discard. When Zhou Ruo An tries to sever himself from Lin Yi with several stacks of cash and an order to forget the man he used to be, Lin Yi takes the money and walks away. It should be the end. Instead, it becomes the beginning of an increasingly vicious struggle between two men who know every weakness, humiliation, secret, and ugly truth the other possesses. Money becomes leverage, affection becomes debt, and every attempt to let go only gives them another weapon to drag each other back.

Filth is a dark modern romance about ambition, class, identity, loyalty, and two deeply flawed men who have seen each other at their absolute worst. Neither is interested in saving the other. Neither is particularly interested in becoming better. And perhaps that is precisely why, no matter how dirty things become, neither of them can truly walk away.

Shared Universe: Filth is set in the same universe as No Such Bird and Four-Faced Buddha. Each novel follows its own story and can be read independently, but they share the same broader world.

Source Availability & Numbering Notes

During our final proofreading of Filth, we conducted a more extensive source investigation because several surviving copies of the novel contain unusual chapter numbering, missing sections, or different chapter boundaries.

The current official Changpei edition was treated as the primary authority wherever we were able to verify it directly. We also compared multiple surviving mirrors and other available copies when necessary to check completeness.

Our current findings are as follows:

  • Chapter 27 → Chapter 29: The official Changpei edition skips the displayed number Chapter 28. The platform’s internal chapter sequence remains continuous, and Chapter 29 continues directly from Chapter 27. We found no evidence of missing story content.
  • Chapter 48 → Chapter 50: The current official edition contains the entire park/rockery sequence within Chapter 48 and then proceeds directly to Chapter 50. There is no separately listed Chapter 49 in the current official edition. Some mirrors preserve or divide this material differently, which initially made the source history appear more complicated. We also located a related chapter from Su Er Liang’s novel Bad Person that depicts the same incident from another point of view. We have posted it as a special crossover chapter, but it should not be considered a recovered or replacement Filth Chapter 49.
  • Chapter 61 → Chapter 63: We verified directly from the official Changpei reader that Chapter 61 reaches 100% and is immediately followed by Chapter 63. There is no separately listed Chapter 62 in the current official edition, and the narrative continues without any apparent missing prose.
  • Extra Five → Extra Seven: The official edition likewise skips directly from Extra Five to Extra Seven. Changpei’s internal chapter sequence remains continuous, Extra Seven is explicitly identified as the final extra, and the other catalogs and surviving copies we checked show the same numbering jump. We found no evidence that story content is currently missing between the two extras.

Because of these findings, Futile Devices Scans preserves the chapter and extra numbering of the current official edition rather than renumbering later chapters to close the gaps.

We cannot rule out the possibility that an earlier version of the novel once used different chapter divisions or contained chapters later merged, renamed, or removed. Without archived official copies, however, there is not enough evidence to state that Chapters 28, 49, 62, or Extra Six were deleted or lost. At present, the safest conclusion is that these are numbering and/or revision anomalies in the published edition rather than confirmed missing story content.

Some unofficial mirrors also omit portions of otherwise existing chapters or place chapter boundaries differently. For that reason, the final proofread translation was checked against the official Changpei text wherever available and cross-referenced against multiple surviving sources when necessary.

If an archived official version containing genuinely additional material ever surfaces, we will review it and update the translation accordingly.
