Synopsis
San Francisco, 1932. In the shadow of the Great Depression, Qin Siyu is a young Chinese immigrant struggling to carve out a future in a country that offers him little kindness. Between exhausting work, financial hardship, and the discrimination faced by Chinese Americans, his dream of becoming a doctor seems almost impossibly distant. Yet Qin Siyu refuses to surrender his ambitions. An unexpected encounter brings him into the life of Kingsley Aston, a young man born into the wealth and privilege that Qin Siyu has never known.
They come from different worlds, divided by nationality, race, class, and the expectations placed upon them. What begins as an unlikely acquaintance gradually deepens into a friendship built on mutual admiration, intellectual companionship, and an attraction neither is prepared to acknowledge. In an era when their feelings could threaten everything they hope to achieve, the two young men find themselves falling in love despite knowing how much they stand to lose.
As the years pass, their relationship is tested by family opposition, social prejudice, conflicting obligations, and the increasingly turbulent world around them. Their determination to remain together demands difficult choices, while the outbreak of war brings dangers far beyond the private struggles they once faced. From American cities to the battlefields of World War II and the uncertainties of the postwar years, their lives become intertwined with a history that repeatedly threatens to tear them apart.
Across decades of separation, sacrifice, ambition, and reunion, Qin Siyu and Kingsley Aston discover that love is not always enough to shield two people from the cruelty of the world. Yet neither is willing to abandon the life they hope to share. To outsiders, theirs is an extraordinary story of defiance, hardship, and devotion. To the two men who lived it, the truth is far simpler: they fell in love, and through everything, they continued choosing each other.
