The man introduced himself as someone surnamed Gu, a member of the Gu family.
Feng Jia had originally worried that the visitor might have bad intentions, but the moment she heard he was from the Gu family, she immediately instructed a servant to go upstairs and call Yu Hongming down. Yu Hongming had initially thought that Wang Ning’an had already handled the matter so quickly and connected him with the Gu family, but when he came downstairs, he discovered that the visitor was a man around thirty years old.
When the man saw Yu Hongming walking over, he stood up and politely said, “Chairman Yu, let me introduce myself first. My name is Gu Ping.”
“Gu Ping?”
Some time ago, in order to seek the Gu family’s help, Yu Hongming had deliberately investigated the Gu family’s situation. He knew of Gu Ping, but Gu Ping did not carry enough weight within the Gu family—or rather, he did not carry enough weight in front of Old Master Gu. That was why Yu Hongming had always hesitated about seeking their help. Asking them for assistance would inevitably require paying a significant price, and if the result proved unsatisfactory, then the benefits given away would have been wasted.
“So you’re Gu Jiaqing’s son. I’ve seen you before at gatherings. You said you had something important to tell me. What is it?”
Gu Ping knew Yu Hongming’s words were merely polite courtesy and smiled. “Chairman Yu is straightforward, so I’ll speak directly. What I want to discuss concerns Wang Ning’an. Of course, it also concerns the future of Shenghui Pharmaceuticals. The fewer people who know about this matter, the better.”
Hearing this, Yu Hongming raised an eyebrow slightly.
Feng Jia could tell that Gu Ping did not want her listening in, so she tactfully went upstairs. She didn’t mind their avoidance of her. If it was something she was allowed to know, Yu Hongming would definitely tell her afterward.
“Now you can speak. If I’m not mistaken, Wang Ning’an is Old Master Gu’s grandson. In that case, he should count as your cousin, right?” Not only that, Yu Hongming also knew that Wang Ning’an’s appearance posed a tremendous threat to Gu Ping. Therefore, from Gu Ping’s perspective, he probably wanted nothing more than to eliminate Wang Ning’an as an obstacle. Because of this, Yu Hongming did not immediately take a side. No matter what Gu Ping said next regarding Wang Ning’an, he would reserve a degree of suspicion.
Gu Ping replied, “That’s right. He can indeed be considered my cousin. However, Third Granduncle has yet to publicly acknowledge his identity, so it’s still hard to say.”
“Then what exactly are you trying to tell me?”
“Has Chairman Yu never wondered why Wang Ning’an, despite being my Third Granduncle’s grandson, still chooses to remain at Shenghui? After all, joining the Gu Corporation would offer him a far brighter future than staying at Shenghui. Wang Ning’an is a smart man—he wouldn’t do something that harms his own interests.”
Yu Hongming narrowed his eyes faintly. “Wouldn’t it benefit you more if he didn’t go to the Gu Corporation?”
Ever since learning that Wang Ning’an might be Gu Shouzhuo’s grandson, Yu Hongming had certainly wondered why Wang Ning’an still stayed at Shenghui. But after seeing Wang Ning’an devote himself wholeheartedly to the company and repeatedly pull it back from crisis, he gradually stopped suspecting him.
He felt the possibility of Wang Ning’an coveting Shenghui was extremely small. After all, the Gu Corporation was far superior to Shenghui. Why would Wang Ning’an abandon the Gu Corporation—which he could rightfully inherit—and instead remain at Shenghui as merely a vice president? No matter how one looked at it, it wasn’t worth it.
“Chairman Yu is correct. The reason I came to see you today is simply because we share a common enemy. And I can’t bear to watch you being toyed with by Wang Ning’an.”
“What do you mean by that?” Yu Hongming’s face darkened.
Gu Ping answered confidently, “Exactly what the words imply. Shenghui has recently encountered a major crisis. If it isn’t handled properly, the company may even go bankrupt. If I told you that Wang Ning’an was the one behind all of this, would you believe me?”
A sharp glint flashed through Yu Hongming’s eyes. “I think you’re trying to use my hand to get rid of Wang Ning’an.” He simply didn’t believe Gu Ping’s words.
But Gu Ping wasn’t angered. “Then you’ve guessed wrong. I certainly do want to eliminate Wang Ning’an, but if he completely falls out with Shenghui, he definitely won’t stay there anymore. At that point, it would instead push him into joining the Gu Corporation. What benefit would that bring me? I already said earlier that Wang Ning’an is our common enemy.”
“What evidence do you have?”
“I don’t have evidence,” Gu Ping admitted, “but I believe that if you investigate, you’ll definitely find traces and clues. In my opinion, Wang Ning’an is likely trying to swallow up Shenghui. This recent anticancer drug scandal was very likely orchestrated behind the scenes by him. Chairman Yu, why don’t you think carefully about it? Although Young Master Yu’s position was higher than Wang Ning’an’s, the authority he possessed was nowhere near enough to accomplish something like this. Wang Ning’an, as vice president, held tremendous power. Many things simply couldn’t be carried out without his approval. Shenghui is a major company with strict rules and procedures. If something bypassed the proper process, how could the relevant departments fail to report it? The only explanation is that Wang Ning’an actually knew about everything long ago, but pretended not to know. He even deliberately helped Young Master Yu because his goal was to make the situation escalate so he could profit from it.”
If this had been before today, Yu Hongming would definitely have asked what Wang Ning’an stood to gain from all this. But this very morning, he had just transferred five percent of the company’s shares to Wang Ning’an. His expression immediately turned ugly.
That’s right—thinking about it carefully, there really were parts of the entire incident that didn’t make sense. But that day, his anger had clouded his judgment. In addition, employees had testified on Wang Ning’an’s behalf, proving that the matter had been entirely Yu Yong’s doing. Even he himself had been led by the nose. Afterwards, he had been too busy dealing with the company’s crisis to notice anything suspicious about Wang Ning’an.
The moment Gu Ping saw Yu Hongming’s expression, he knew his words had worked. Yu Hongming had already begun to suspect Wang Ning’an. Once the seed of suspicion was planted, it would be impossible to uproot it again.
“If what you’re saying is true, then why would Wang Ning’an scheme against Shenghui? Maybe in the past it would’ve made sense, but now he’s the Gu Corporation’s sole legal heir. He lacks neither money nor power. Why would he go through all this trouble just to take over Shenghui?” Yu Hongming’s face darkened. He couldn’t imagine that he himself had personally promoted such a dangerous person into the president’s position. During the period when he hadn’t been at the company, what else had Wang Ning’an done?
“If even Chairman Yu doesn’t know, then how would I?” Gu Ping replied. “Maybe Chairman Yu offended him in the past.”
Yu Hongming immediately thought of how Yu Hongzhi had framed Wang Ning’an. But Wang Ning’an had already retaliated—Hongzhi had gone to prison. Was that still not enough to satisfy his hatred?
“I’ve already said everything I came to say. Whether you believe it or not is up to you, Chairman Yu. No matter what your final decision is, I’ll always welcome the opportunity to cooperate with you. But personally, I don’t think you should deliberate for too long. Every extra day you delay only benefits Wang Ning’an more,” Gu Ping said sincerely.
After a servant informed her that the guest had already left, Feng Jia came downstairs. Seeing Yu Hongming’s increasingly ugly expression, her heart jolted. She instinctively felt that something major must have happened, and even her tone became cautious.
“Hongming, what did that Gu Ping say?”
The moment she finished speaking, Feng Jia saw Yu Hongming suddenly lift his head. His eyes were bloodshot as he stared at her. She clearly saw a fury in them unlike anything she had ever witnessed before, startling her badly.
“What’s wrong?”
“It’s all because of your brilliant idea!” Yu Hongming suddenly grabbed the teacup on the table and hurled it at her feet. With a loud crack, it shattered into pieces. Some fragments splashed onto Feng Jia’s leg, instantly cutting a thin line of blood across her pale skin.
“Hongming, what’s gotten into you? What did I do to make you so angry?” Feng Jia was utterly bewildered. She remembered never having done anything to betray Yu Hongming. The only time she had acted without his permission was when she brought their son to see him, but that matter had long since passed. If he wanted to settle accounts with her over that, he would have done so much earlier.
Yu Hongming immediately repeated everything Gu Ping had said about Wang Ning’an. The more he thought about it, the more suspicious Wang Ning’an seemed. Looking back now, there actually had been signs long ago, but at the time, he had never considered that possibility. Back then, Wang Ning’an had merely been someone without any significant background—how could he possibly have had such capabilities? That was why Yu Hongming had never once suspected Wang Ning’an’s motives.
After hearing his explanation, Feng Jia’s face turned pale.
If Wang Ning’an truly was the mastermind behind Shenghui being dragged into the fake anticancer drug scandal, then her earlier suggestion to gift Wang Ning’an company shares had instead personally handed him leverage that could be used against them. No wonder Hongming was so furious.
“I-I… Hongming, I didn’t know it would turn out like this either. It’s only because Wang Ning’an hid himself too deeply—even you were deceived by him. But why exactly would he do this? Could it be because Li Xin and her son previously did something terrible to Wang Ning’an behind your back, and that’s what drove him to such frenzied revenge?”
Feng Jia deliberately put on a pale and defeated expression as she collapsed onto the sofa. Right now, her only thought was that she absolutely could not allow Yu Hongming to place all the blame on her. Otherwise, given Yu Hongming’s personality, he might end up despising her because of this.
Yu Hongming was immediately distracted by her words. “That’s right. It’s also possible that Li Xin and Hongzhi did something in the past.”
Seeing this, Feng Jia finally relaxed inwardly with relief.
The shares that had already been given away were certainly impossible to recover. Of course, Yu Hongming also had no intention of giving Wang Ning’an the remaining shares anymore. Wasn’t Wang Ning’an trying to seize control of his company? Then he could also make use of this matter. Once Shenghui overcame its current crisis, he would deal with Wang Ning’an afterward. Right now, what he needed to do was pretend not to know Wang Ning’an’s true face, continue placing great trust in him, and lower his guard.
Privately, Yu Hongming had already sent people to investigate Wang Ning’an. He wanted to know exactly what kind of grudge Wang Ning’an had against Shenghui. Only by finding the root of the problem could it be resolved.
