Lu Guang Ming had been in excellent spirits lately. On this particular day, the entire team went out on an operation, escorting a big-name business tycoon back to the ICAC for ‘coffee’. Everyone sat solemnly in the vehicle accompanying the tycoon—except for Lu Guang Ming, who stared out the window, lost in thought, grinning foolishly.
Chief Investigator Xu coughed beside him. “We’re inviting someone for ‘coffee’—be serious.”
Lu Guang Ming snapped back to attention, nodding like a pecking chick, “Yes, yes, yes,” still smiling. Under Chief Investigator Xu’s glare, he immediately straightened his face and posture, staring forward with forced solemnity.
……
“You guys see him? Putting on an act again in front of Chief Investigator Xu—acting all cute. I’m getting goosebumps,” several colleagues gossiped in the pantry after returning.
“He does look kind of cute,” a female colleague said, only to be glared at. She shrank back. “Just… not his personality.”
A new technician from the technical department spoke softly, “Well… I don’t think Sunny is as bad as you all say. Chief Investigator Xu asked me to assist on one of his cases recently—he was polite and enthusiastic.”
Everyone turned to stare. “Polite and enthusiastic? You’re talking about that Sunny??”
The technician stammered, “Th-th-there’s only one Sunny in the whole office…”
At that moment, a head popped into the doorway. “You’re all here? Franky-boy too—thanks for helping me buy breakfast yesterday. I just got some afternoon pastries—who wants sugar doughnuts?”
The entire room froze as if seeing a ghost. Lu Guang Ming—famously stingy—walked in with a box of pastries, smiling brightly.
“I bought a lot—let’s all share. Haven’t had sugar doughnuts in ages. I even took a bus to an old shop to get them. Makes me think of childhood, hehe.”
Everyone looked at the pastries as if they were poison.
Finally, Franky reached out and took one. “Why are you all just staring? Eat.”
The others hesitated—until Chief Investigator Xu entered with a cup of coffee.
“What are you all doing here? No one’s outside—anyone would think today’s a holiday. What’s this? Sugar doughnuts! Haven’t had these in years!”
The superior cheerfully picked one. “Why aren’t you eating? Come on, everyone.”
The colleagues followed suit, each holding a doughnut like a hot potato, awkwardly leaving one by one.
Only Chief Investigator Xu and Lu Guang Ming remained, pouring water. Lu Guang Ming blinked at him, clearly seeking approval.
“Chief Investigator Xu, about before—I know I was wrong. How have I been lately?”
Chief Investigator Xu sighed helplessly. “You’re acting like you took the wrong medicine. Don’t change so drastically—you’re going to scare them.”
Though it was a mild scolding, Lu Guang Ming took it as “criticism out of care” and felt delighted.
……
The interrogation of the business tycoon went on in shifts for 24 hours and progressed rapidly. By the next afternoon, after his eighth cup of coffee, the suspect finally confessed.
That evening, off-duty colleagues decided to celebrate with karaoke.
Lu Guang Ming usually never joined such gatherings. But since everyone had eaten his sugar doughnuts—and they did taste just like childhood—they weren’t sure how to read him anymore. They sent Franky to ask if he would come.
“Of course!” Lu Guang Ming said enthusiastically. “Drinking? Let’s drink!”
That night, he drank with everyone, getting thoroughly intoxicated. Many present had suffered from his sharp tongue before and took the opportunity to pour drinks into him. He saw through their intentions but accepted everything, almost as if atoning through alcohol.
At first, he was restrained, unfamiliar with group activities. But after a few rounds, his true nature emerged. Shamelessly, he jumped on stage, tied his jacket around his waist, slung an arm around Franky, and sang Alliance of Broken Hearts.
“He always leaves only a phone number, never lets me walk him home… I heard you once loved him too…”
The two handsome men swayed wildly, twisting their waists, hopping across the stage. Soon everyone joined in, shouting together:
“Find a way to admit heartbreak! Let your heart take a break! When you think of him again—draw a cross in your memory!”
Lu Guang Ming threw his jacket into the air and howled, “Draw a cross in your memory—ahhh!”
The room erupted in cheers. “Encore! Encore!”
“No more!” he laughed, retreating to a corner, secretly downing another half glass.
On stage, Franky sang Only Wish to Love One Person softly:
“I wander half-drunk through the dusk…”
Hearing it, Lu Guang Ming’s eyes grew wet.
“I only wish to love one person in this life… even a lifetime wouldn’t be enough…”
He stared into his glass.
Brother Jia Qi… I think I’ve really fallen for him.
That day he apologized… said ‘I’ll believe everything you say’… even fixed my hair… told me to ‘get inside’… he’s so adorable.
I don’t want to be just casual anymore… I want to hold him every night and sleep together—just sleep.
I want to love him—for you.
But his one true love is still you. I shouldn’t take that. I can’t take it.
He knew clearly—no matter how kind Xie Jia Hua was, it was only concern, only sympathy. At best, he would treat him like a younger brother, out of lingering affection for Jia Qi.
In their story, he had no place.
Feeling the weight of it, he drank another glass.
Franky came down and tried to stop him. “Sunny, don’t drink anymore—you’ll be too drunk to get home.”
“It’s fine,” he grinned, hugging the bottle. “Someone’s picking me up.”
“Who? Don’t you live alone?”
He smirked proudly. “You’ll see later. A very handsome big brother.”
Franky sighed enviously. “You have a brother? I don’t—I’m the eldest, always worrying about my younger siblings…”
Lu Guang Ming thought smugly: This ‘brother’ is not that kind of brother. He’s the one I want to sleep with.
Soon, it was time to leave. Those who could go home left; the rest waited for pickups. Lu Guang Ming sprawled drunkenly with others. Franky used his phone to call.
“Why did you name your brother ‘Fool’ in English?”
“He… hic… he is a fool.”
A drunk colleague suddenly hugged him. “Sunny! I owe you an apology! You’re actually a good kid—just a bit of a fool. You were just shy before, right? Don’t worry—we’re good people. We wouldn’t bully you…”
“Thanks, Brother Win… I was the one in the wrong before.”
“Come! I’ll take you home!”
“You’re drunk too!” Franky protested. “Your wife’s coming—want to kneel on a washboard later?”
“I don’t need you!” Lu Guang Ming laughed. “I want my handsome brother!”
The “handsome brother” soon arrived.
Franky eagerly opened the door—
Only to see a bald, buck-toothed caretaker uncle.
The man skillfully hoisted the limp Lu Guang Ming onto his shoulder and said bluntly:
“Mr. Xie is busy on a case—no time. He asked me to take you home. Labor fee 100 dollars, taxi fare separate. If you don’t have money, borrow from colleagues—claim reimbursement from him later.”
“……”
—Reimburse my ass! If you didn’t have time, just say so! Why send a caretaker to carry me?! What about my dignity in front of colleagues?! Who would fall for that stupid Yam—ahhh!!
