The next day, Lei Yunze accompanied Gu Ziyu to work. The moment they entered the law firm together, they attracted everyone’s attention. Aside from Mi Li, none of the employees knew of Lei Yunze’s existence, so even Chen Qiu had no idea where he came from.
Everyone felt as though they had been blinded. Hadn’t they heard that Lawyer Gu didn’t have a boyfriend? They certainly didn’t believe that a man with Lei Yunze’s extraordinary presence was merely a bodyguard hired by Lawyer Gu. If bodyguards could all be this handsome and cool, they wanted to hire one too. Therefore, there could only be one answer—he was her boyfriend.
The male employees were somewhat crestfallen. Previously, they had thought that if Lawyer Gu, this beautiful rose, didn’t have a boyfriend, they might have a chance. Some had even planned to confess to her someday. Now, however, the legitimate boyfriend had appeared, dealing them a heavy blow.
Before coming to work, Mi Li had stopped somewhere else first. By the time she arrived at the firm, working hours had already begun. The moment she entered, she saw that several employees who should have been at their desks were huddled together whispering. The instant they spotted her, they swarmed over.
“Lawyer Mi, didn’t you say before that Lawyer Gu didn’t have a boyfriend?”
“What’s the problem?” Mi Li asked in surprise.
“Of course there’s a problem!” one female colleague exclaimed, clasping her hands together, her eyes practically shaped like hearts. “Lawyer Gu came to work with her boyfriend today. We all saw him. Her boyfriend is so handsome.”
“That’s impossible,” Mi Li immediately refuted. If Ziyu had a boyfriend, she definitely would have known. Just a few days ago, she had even stayed at her apartment.
“We have no reason to lie to you. If you don’t believe us, go check Lawyer Gu’s office. They’re both in there right now.”
Everyone immediately encouraged her to investigate. Although they sounded certain, they still wanted to know the truth.
Putting on a stern face, Mi Li said, “It’s working hours. Why are all of you so obsessed with gossip? Thinking of changing careers and becoming reporters? Get back to work.”
The group immediately scattered. In their excitement, they had nearly forgotten that Lawyer Mi was even stricter than Lawyer Gu. Gossiping in front of her was practically asking for death.
When Mi Li arrived at the office, she was indeed curious. A man accompanying Ziyu to work was unusual. It couldn’t be a client. Most of the firm’s cases passed through her hands, and Gu Ziyu had just finished a case. She only had one active case at the moment, and that client was a woman.
“You?”
The moment she saw Lei Yunze’s distinctive face, Mi Li was surprised. Since graduation, she had heard nothing about him. Now he had suddenly reappeared in their lives. What exactly was going on? She shot Gu Ziyu a questioning look.
Gu Ziyu spread her hands helplessly. As for how things had ended up like this, she didn’t want to talk about it herself.
Mi Li asked Gu Ziyu to step outside with her. Knowing her friend had countless questions, Gu Ziyu told Lei Yunze to sit and wait before following Mi Li to the break room.
“Alright, explain. What’s going on?” Mi Li crossed her arms and waited.
Gu Ziyu hadn’t wanted to tell her because she didn’t want her to worry, but judging by her expression, there was no avoiding it. So she told her everything about Song He’s attack.
When Mi Li heard that Song He had actually laid hands on her, she was shocked. “Then it’s a good thing Lei Yunze showed up.”
She couldn’t imagine what might have happened otherwise. Ziyu’s status was no longer ordinary. If something had happened to her, the entire capital might have shaken.
“So that’s what happened. He says he’s worried something similar might happen again, so he insists on accompanying me to work.”
Gu Ziyu felt uncomfortable all over. She didn’t like people following her around. If it were an ordinary person, that would be one thing, but Lei Yunze’s presence was impossible to ignore.
Staring at her delicate face, Mi Li’s eyes flashed. “I think Lei Yunze likes you.”
Gu Ziyu froze, then blushed. “What nonsense are you talking about? How could he possibly like me?”
“Why couldn’t he? If he didn’t like you, why would he know you were in danger? It’s obvious he’s been paying attention to you. And now he’s insisting on accompanying you to and from work. Even siblings don’t go that far. If he wasn’t interested in you, he could have simply hired a couple of bodyguards instead of showing up personally.”
Mi Li would stake her reputation on it—Lei Yunze absolutely liked Gu Ziyu.
After thinking about it, Gu Ziyu said, “If he really liked me, why didn’t he say anything back when we were in school? A man like Lei Yunze seems like the type who would take the initiative if he liked someone. Since he never said anything, I don’t want to flatter myself. Some experiences are enough once.”
“That’s true, but don’t forget that all those troubles you had in school were resolved by him. Sure, he was helping because your second brother asked him to, but if someone truly felt nothing for another person, would they care about them consistently for four years? Especially when you were already capable of solving many of those problems yourself later on?”
After Gu Ziyu’s identity became public, everyone learned she was the Gu family’s princess. After that, no one dared bully her anymore. However, new troubles appeared. More and more boys liked her, and some seized every opportunity to confess. She grew so annoyed by it that Lei Yunze eventually stepped in and beat up a boy who had been relentlessly pestering her. After that, things finally calmed down. At the same time, rumors spread across campus that Lei Yunze and Gu Ziyu were dating.
Although Gu Ziyu denied it, nobody believed her. Lei Yunze never stepped forward to clarify either. Perhaps he simply wanted to use the rumor to discourage other boys from bothering her. Even so, Mi Li had every reason to believe that Lei Yunze wasn’t entirely unaffected by Gu Ziyu.
After graduation, Lei Yunze disappeared from her life, and for a time Mi Li wondered if she’d been mistaken. But now she was certain.
Lei Yunze definitely liked Ziyu.
Seeing Gu Ziyu frown, Mi Li said earnestly, “Honestly, I think Lei Yunze is a pretty good guy. In a way, he’s actually quite devoted to you.”
Gu Ziyu shot her an irritated glare and complained, “What’s the use of being devoted? Don’t tell me you expect me to confess to him first. Since he won’t say anything, why should I be the one to pierce that layer of paper?”
With that, she returned to the office.
Mi Li almost stood there stunned.
From the sound of it, Ziyu seemed to have feelings too.
Then again, it wasn’t ideal for a girl to be the one to speak first. The key still lay with Lei Yunze.
That afternoon, Gu Ziyu had an appointment with a client at a café. Lei Yunze went along as well. They didn’t return until after four o’clock, and on the way back, Gu Ziyu complained the entire time, telling him never to accompany her again.
The reason was simple.
While discussing the case with her female client, the woman kept glancing elsewhere. Her gaze repeatedly drifted toward Lei Yunze, and she even steered the conversation toward him several times. It was obvious she had become so captivated by him that she nearly forgot about the case itself. Furious, Gu Ziyu had driven Lei Yunze to another table. Only after realizing her intentions had been discovered did the client sheepishly return to discussing business.
Although the matter was resolved, Gu Ziyu remained annoyed. The moment they returned to the office, she shut the door in Lei Yunze’s face.
Touching the bridge of his nose, which had nearly been hit by the door, Lei Yunze slowly smiled.
A jealous woman really wasn’t cute at all.
Mi Li happened to walk out of the neighboring office just in time to witness the scene.
“Lei Yunze, let’s talk.”
Lei Yunze neither agreed nor disagreed, but he followed her outside anyway. Leaning casually against the wall, he asked coolly, “What do you want to talk about?”
“About Ziyu. If you keep following her around every day, it’s going to interfere with both her work and her love life.”
Lei Yunze narrowed his eyes at her.
“Let’s set work aside for now. How exactly am I interfering with her love life? As far as I know, she doesn’t have a boyfriend. How would me accompanying her interfere with anything?”
Mi Li answered seriously, “Precisely because she doesn’t have a boyfriend. If you keep following her around, people will assume you’re her boyfriend. What do you think all the men pursuing her will think? If they give up because of that misunderstanding, wouldn’t you be interfering with her chances of developing a relationship?”
“If they want to misunderstand, let them. If a man retreats because of something this trivial, then he’s not worth having anyway.”
Lei Yunze sounded distinctly displeased.
A misunderstanding?
Good.
He wanted them to misunderstand.
“How is that trivial?” Mi Li replied. “Not every man is willing to steal someone else’s partner. Third parties who break up relationships get struck by lightning, you know. You might not care, but Ziyu is different. A man in his thirties can wait to get married, but she’s at exactly the age when she should be dating.”
A glint flashed through her eyes.
“And to be honest, I’ve actually been thinking about introducing someone to her. I know a man from an excellent family with excellent character. He’s only two or three years older than you. He’s a perfect match for Ziyu.”
“No.”
Lei Yunze rejected the idea instantly.
“Why not?” Mi Li stared at him.
Lei Yunze’s expression twitched slightly. “Anyway, it just won’t do.”
Mi Li let out a scoffing laugh and mocked him, “And why not? You’re not anything to Ziyu. Even her family hasn’t said anything. What right do you have to say no?”
“Because I like her!” Lei Yunze finally blurted it out. Mi Li’s words had left him stewing with frustration. Why not? He wanted to know the answer too. After thinking it over and over, he came to only one conclusion—Gu Ziyu could only belong to him. No other man was worthy of her.
“If you like someone, you have to say it out loud. If you don’t, how is anyone supposed to know you like Ziyu?” Mi Li crossed her arms and lifted her chin as she looked at him. “Lei Yunze, if you’re a man, then take the initiative. Don’t drag your feet and wait until a real rival shows up. When that happens, I’ll look down on you.”
