CU – Chapter 48: Northern Zhou’s Turmoil Part III

They had only just left when a jumble of hurried footsteps sounded in the corridor. Logically, the two groups should have run into each other halfway, but the Immortal Treasury Palace’s Lightning Division came and went like ghosts. Even if they met on a narrow road, they could probably pass each other without incident.

Sure enough, the Ministry of Justice men hurried over without so much as glancing aside. Liao Shang was at the front. He strode quickly to Fu Xi Yan’s cell. “What happened?”

Fu Xi Yan sat cross-legged on the floor, wrapped in a robe. He sniffed and said, “Lord Tu Mu was taken away.”

Liao Shang hurriedly inspected the lock and found it completely intact. He then checked the iron bars across the cell’s only window. Those had not been disturbed either. “How was he taken away? Who took him?”

Fu Xi Yan shook his head. “I don’t know.”

Liao Shang’s voice sank. “Lord Fu.”

Fu Xi Yan rolled his eyes at him. “Do you realize that just now I nearly went from Lord Fu to Dead Fu?”

The prison had been deliberately cleared out, and Liao Shang himself had been lured elsewhere. Someone within the Ministry of Justice had unquestionably arranged it, and whoever was behind it held a rank far beyond anything Liao Shang could casually speculate about. But now that something truly had happened, part of the blame naturally fell on him. He could only soften his tone. “Which is precisely why I am asking Lord Fu to tell me what happened.”

Fu Xi Yan snorted. “I don’t know what happened either. Lord Tu suddenly said he was cold and asked to borrow some clothes from me. But it’s freezing outside, and we’re in a prison. Where would I get spare clothes? I refused, so he tried to take mine. He’s an old man who doesn’t know martial arts, but the way he went after those clothes—heh. Absolutely shameless and desperate enough to risk his life.”

Tu Mu had insulted his mother. Naturally, Fu Xi Yan had no intention of wasting a single drop from the enormous basin of dirty water he was now pouring over Tu Mu’s reputation.

“I thought, at his age, he doesn’t have many years left to wear the clothes of the living anyway, so I voluntarily gave him my outer robe. But he still wasn’t satisfied. He wanted the rest too…” Fu Xi Yan said. “Naturally, I couldn’t keep indulging him. I was just thinking I should knock him unconscious when suddenly I was the one who passed out. When I woke up again, my clothes were gone, and so was Lord Tu.”

Liao Shang was so exasperated he nearly laughed. “So according to Lord Fu, Lord Tu suddenly complained of being cold, tried to steal your clothes, and then you inexplicably lost consciousness. When you woke up, both your clothes and Lord Tu had disappeared?”

Fu Xi Yan nodded without the slightest trace of guilt. “Correct. Exactly so.”

“Then how do you know someone took him away?”

“When I lost consciousness, he was standing right in front of me. He probably wasn’t the one who knocked me out, was he? When I woke up, both he and my clothes were gone, so I assume there’s an eighty or ninety percent chance someone took him away. Otherwise, at his age, what else could he have done? Turn into a dung beetle and roll my clothes out through the bars?”

“Then where did the clothes you’re wearing now come from?”

Fu Xi Yan raised a sleeve to show him the pattern. “Look carefully. Auspicious-cloud motifs. Head Constable Liao should remember that I also brought guards from the Immortal Treasury Palace when I entered the palace to see His Majesty.”

Liao Shang said, “May I meet this particular guard?”

“Unfortunately, after giving me his clothes, I was worried he might get cold, so I sent him back to change.”

“I can wait for him to return.”

“Of course, of course. But I borrowed the man from Pei Yuan Jin. When he comes back, or whether Pei Yuan Jin sends him somewhere else in the meantime, I really couldn’t say.”

Looking at Fu Xi Yan’s utterly brazen expression, Liao Shang’s face abruptly darkened. He pointed toward the opposite cell, where a bloodstained dagger lay on the floor. “Can you explain that dagger?”

A jailer immediately opened the opposite cell, retrieved the dagger, and handed it to Liao Shang.

Fu Xi Yan stood and peered at it with feigned curiosity. “That? Doesn’t look familiar.”

“It also bears an auspicious-cloud pattern.”

“Oh? Does it? Then perhaps there was a fight while I was unconscious?”

After the Chen Wen Ju incident, Fu Xi Yan’s acting skills had reached an entirely new level. His look of surprise was so convincing that even Liao Shang found it difficult to tell whether it was genuine.

Still unwilling to give up, Liao Shang said, “No matter how cold Lord Tu was, surely he had no reason to strip off even the clothes you wore next to your skin?”

Although Fu Xi Yan had wrapped the outer robe tightly around himself, a small patch of pale chest remained exposed, rather conspicuously.

Fu Xi Yan sighed. “Exactly. Which is why I’ve been wondering whether whoever took Lord Tu wanted me to freeze to death. Think about it. This prison is huge. I could scream to Heaven and earth and nobody would answer. If I quietly died here without anyone knowing, who would ever find out?”

Liao Shang knew he was in the wrong on that point. “I still came.”

Fu Xi Yan smiled. “Yes. Better late than never. Head Constable Liao might have a promising second career collecting corpses.”

Liao Shang stepped forward until the tip of his boot touched the bars. Leaning his head slightly closer, he lowered his voice. “Do you really think I believe any of this?”

Fu Xi Yan’s expression did not change. He leaned closer as well and lowered his voice. “Then does Head Constable Liao have a better explanation?”

He did not.

Faced with the bizarre scene before him, even Liao Shang, with all his investigative experience, could not immediately untangle what had happened. But he would have wagered his head that the Immortal Treasury Palace’s Lightning Division was nowhere near as innocent as Fu Xi Yan was pretending.

Fu Xi Yan simply leaned a little closer. “Don’t you think there’s something strange about the Ministry of Justice prison today?”

Liao Shang said nothing.

Of course there was.

First, Fu Xi Yan had been transferred into Tu Mu’s cell. Then both the jailers and Liao Shang himself had been drawn away. Even the prisoners in the neighboring cells had been moved elsewhere beforehand, as though someone had known in advance that something was going to happen here.

Had someone truly come to rescue Tu Mu?

Then why had Fu Xi Yan specifically been transferred into the same cell?

Fu Xi Yan took one look at Liao Shang’s expression and knew he understood. “So I’m not the problem. The problem is whoever prepared all of this in advance.”

Liao Shang asked, “What exactly are you trying to say?”

“Stop wasting your time on me.”

Liao Shang neither agreed nor disagreed. He took a step back and raised his voice. “Lord Fu has suffered greatly. Prepare a tub of hot water for his bath and a warm set of clothes. We certainly cannot allow a Vajra Stage expert to freeze to death inside the Ministry of Justice prison.”

He deliberately emphasized “Vajra Stage,” clearly mocking Fu Xi Yan’s claim that he might freeze to death.

Fu Xi Yan had only recently been worrying that spending too long in prison might leave him covered in lice and fleas. Now someone was voluntarily bringing him bathwater. He immediately brightened, completely unconcerned with whether Liao Shang was mocking him.

While Fu Xi Yan was bathing, the palace order to keep him in solitary confinement finally arrived. The decree was delivered directly into Liao Shang’s hands, and when the messenger departed, he conveniently took the Vice Minister of Justice away with him.

The implication was thought-provoking.

Liao Shang neither dared ask nor dared think too deeply about it. Once Fu Xi Yan had washed, he transferred him to a spacious cell of his own and even had a silk quilt and fine food prepared.

Tu Mu’s disappearance appeared to pass silently into obscurity, with those above unwilling to pursue the matter and those below unwilling to investigate.

Although Liao Shang did not report what had happened in the Ministry of Justice, word nevertheless reached Yu Shuang Xi very quickly. He skimmed the report and immediately presented it to Emperor Jianhong.

Emperor Jianhong asked, “What do you make of it?”

Yu Shuang Xi said, “Based on the displacement of the straw inside Tu Mu’s cell, Liao Shang has already made a preliminary reconstruction of what happened.”

Emperor Jianhong seemed to laugh softly. “Remarkably persistent. It seems the boy truly is qualified to be listed alongside Lou Wu Zai as a candidate for Chief Constable. What did he discover?”

“He suspects there was no third person inside the cell itself. There was only a fight between two people, though others may have assisted from outside the bars.”

Emperor Jianhong said, “Fu Xi Yan always has people from the Lightning Division with him. Someone assisting him would be perfectly normal.”

“What Liao Shang cannot understand is this: if there were only two people inside the cell, they could only have been Fu Xi Yan and Tu Mu. Tu Mu was merely the Prefect of the Capital Prefecture, a man supposedly incapable of even restraining a chicken. It is strange enough for him to dare challenge an expert at the late Vajra Stage. But why would Fu Xi Yan, himself an expert at the late Vajra Stage, require outside assistance to subdue him?”

Emperor Jianhong nodded. “His suspicion is reasonable. What do you think?”

Yu Shuang Xi said, “It seems Your Majesty identified the right man.”

A sharp light flashed through Emperor Jianhong’s eyes as he looked over.

For once, a faint trace of genuine pleasure appeared on Yu Shuang Xi’s usually impassive face. It meant his mission was nearly complete. He would no longer need to remain trapped in the imperial palace, pretending to be a eunuch and bowing his head before others.

“Tie Rong Rong is a Puppet King. Tu Mu was most likely the greatest trump card in her hands—the King Puppet capable of concealing itself and acting independently without its master’s active control. A King Puppet does not need to practice martial arts, yet can display strength at the Mortal-Shedding Stage or even the Dao-Entry Stage. Killing someone at the late Vajra Stage would be more than easy enough. Once he attacked, the Lightning Division around Fu Xi Yan would naturally have been forced to intervene. From what we can see now, the Immortal Treasury Palace ultimately gained the upper hand and eliminated Tu Mu.”

“What about Fu Xi Yan?”

“Reportedly unharmed.”

Emperor Jianhong frowned slightly. “Unharmed again?”

From the Chen Wen Ju case, to the Southern Yu Wall-Breaching Crossbow, to Tu Mu today… that fatty had escaped completely unscathed far too many times for it not to seem suspiciously convenient.

Yu Shuang Xi was already thinking about how he would soon be able to leave the palace and had no desire to create additional complications. For once, he indulged in a little flattery. “For Your Majesty to identify a King Puppet from among the entire civil and military court truly demonstrates Heaven-granted wisdom.”

Emperor Jianhong said, “We originally suspected Zhang Yuan. But later, We thought it through. Zhang Yuan spends most of his time inside the palace. Anything he could accomplish, she could accomplish herself. Making him her sole King Puppet would be a waste. Among all the officials of the court, the Prefect of the Capital Prefecture is not highly ranked and attracts little attention, yet occupies a crucial position. He can monitor the movements of every faction in Haojing and legitimately clean up after any number of schemes and disasters. It is an ideal position.”

He continued, “More importantly, the reason We originally favored Tu Mu for that office was his exceptional ability to notice the smallest details. After becoming a King Puppet, handling ordinary daily affairs would pose no problem. But whenever something unprecedented happened, something outside the experiences he had encountered before, he could no longer respond appropriately and could only appear mediocre. That was the flaw.”

Yu Shuang Xi offered another round of halfhearted praise. “When does Your Majesty intend to act?”

Emperor Jianhong walked outward until he reached the entrance of the hall. Seeing the decorations and lanterns outside, even more elaborate than usual, he suddenly asked, “Today is the Lantern Festival?”

Yu Shuang Xi said, “It is.”

“Then let’s make the Lantern Festival lively.”

Ever since Rong Rong moved into Shicui Hall, every Lantern Festival had passed in cold silence. This year, for the first time in her life, she ordered the palace maids to decorate the place. Lanterns of every color hung along the corridors, while little animal-shaped lanterns were arranged across the ground. Even without much human presence, all that candlelight lent the hall a faint air of festivity.

A palace maid came to report, “His Majesty and Yu Shuang Xi have left the palace.”

Rong Rong smiled. “He truly couldn’t wait even another moment.”

She flipped onto the roof, stepped lightly across the gray tiles, and stood at the highest point of the ridge to look beyond the palace—

Yulin Guards were converging from every direction.

“They all say you have a private army hidden so deeply no one can find it. I really want to kill every last one of them just to see the look on your face.”

She murmured to herself, a manic smile spreading across her features.

The emperor’s carriage quietly entered the rear courtyard of the Grand Commandant’s residence.

Liu Yan Sheng was already waiting there. He personally helped Emperor Jianhong down from the carriage, then carried a lantern ahead to light the way. “This subject followed Your Majesty’s instructions and had the servants continue their routines as usual. This was my third son’s residence while he was alive. Since he passed away, no one comes here except to clean. We will not be discovered.”

Emperor Jianhong smiled. “When have I ever distrusted the way you handle things?”

Only before this friend who had grown up beside him could he truly put aside the emperor’s airs.

Liu Yan Sheng settled them in the eastern wing.

From the outside, the room looked entirely ordinary, but inside it was lavishly furnished and piled with rare treasures.

Emperor Jianhong said, “Isn’t this a little too conspicuous?”

Liu Yan Sheng replied, “All of these things were sent here under my third son’s name. I always doted on him, so everyone is accustomed to it. I only hope Your Majesty does not mind.”

Emperor Jianhong waved a hand. “You and I came through mountains of blades and seas of fire together. Why would I be bothered by borrowing the name of someone who has passed away? Besides, he was your son. That made him almost like my son as well.”

Liu Yan Sheng closed the door.

Only he, Emperor Jianhong, and Yu Shuang Xi remained inside.

Emperor Jianhong poured himself a cup of wine. “I’ve waited all these years. At last, this day has come.”

He poured the wine onto the floor.

“This cup is for Prince Yunzhong and Prince Longnan.”

He set the cup down.

“I stole the realm from their hands, only to spend all these years threatened by a woman and living in constant fear. If they know anything beneath the Yellow Springs, they must find it terribly satisfying.”

Liu Yan Sheng said, “The Puppet Path’s methods are sinister and strange. Your Majesty only discovered the truth after cooperating with her.”

Emperor Jianhong waved a hand. “There is no need to make excuses for me. I was blinded by my own ambition. But if I had the chance to do it over again, I would still choose the same road. Ten thousand li of mountains and rivers, countless subjects, standing above all others… to exchange my life for a view like this, I would gladly die ten thousand deaths.”

The final word had barely left his mouth when a blade flashed.

Liu Yan Sheng slashed toward Emperor Jianhong.

Yu Shuang Xi caught the blade between his bare palms.

After his initial shock, Emperor Jianhong seized the opportunity to flee to the side.

The blade in Liu Yan Sheng’s hand suddenly split apart. A second blade slid free from inside the first and slashed toward Yu Shuang Xi’s head.

Yu Shuang Xi could not change his move in time. He twisted his head aside in desperation, but one ear was sliced clean off.

Blood poured down instantly.

Liu Yan Sheng followed with more than a dozen consecutive slashes.

This old minister had once fought his way through actual wars. Years of luxury and privilege had never completely erased the murderous aura forged on the battlefield. As his chain of attacks unfolded, it was as though the dense flashes of blades and swords from an entire battlefield had been compressed into that tiny room.

The pressure was suffocating.

Yu Shuang Xi suddenly understood what Pei Yuan Jin had said that day.

Cultivation level was one factor that determined victory or defeat.

It was not the only one.

He could sense that Liu Yan Sheng’s cultivation remained only at the middle Mortal-Shedding Stage, yet in actual combat, the older man’s momentum completely suppressed Yu Shuang Xi, who stood at peak Mortal-Shedding Stage.

If this continued, he would die.

He was only a guest retainer of the Heaven-Earth Mirror, paid to carry out a task.

He had never agreed to wager his life!

With a sudden shout, Yu Shuang Xi struck out sixteen times in rapid succession with both palms, committing everything he had to the attack.

Heart-Shattering Sixteen!

It was both his killing move and his ultimate technique.

Even if it could not kill Liu Yan Sheng, as long as it bought him the slightest opening to breathe, he could escape alive.

He wanted to live.

His eyes burned with his hunger for life.

But Liu Yan Sheng’s blade passed through the dense storm of palm force like a dark cloud spreading across the sky, covering Yu Shuang Xi’s eyes and extinguishing the light within them.

The blade descended.

Yu Shuang Xi raised a hand to block.

Liu Yan Sheng altered his technique midway. The flat of the blade slammed viciously against Yu Shuang Xi’s injured ear.

In the instant Yu Shuang Xi reeled from the dizziness, Liu Yan Sheng’s edge swept swiftly toward his vulnerable neck.

The blade flashed.

His head flew free.

It struck the floor facing directly toward Emperor Jianhong. Yu Shuang Xi’s eyes remained wide open, as though he had still not seen enough of the world.

But the light within them had already gone dark.

Liu Yan Sheng looked toward Emperor Jianhong, who was staring at Yu Shuang Xi’s corpse. “Why does Your Majesty not open the door and call for help?”

Emperor Jianhong said, “This is your residence. Everyone inside and outside belongs to you.”

Liu Yan Sheng asked, “Has Your Majesty admitted defeat?”

With his back pressed tightly against a cabinet, Emperor Jianhong raised his head.

“So you are the King Puppet?”

Liu Yan Sheng nodded. “Correct. Mo Xiao Ran deceived you, and he deceived the entire world. A King Puppet is not some mindless puppet with no consciousness that merely follows its old memories. A King Puppet simply gains tremendous power. It does not lose its reason.”

Elio’s Notes: Puppet King (傀儡王) and King Puppet (王傀) are distinct terms in the Puppet Path. A Puppet King is the practitioner or controller, while a King Puppet is a high-level puppet under that control. This chapter reveals that King Puppets retain their own consciousness and reason rather than becoming mindless shells.

Emperor Jianhong stared at his triumphant expression in disbelief. “You volunteered for this? Why?”

Liu Yan Sheng picked up his blade and wiped it with the tablecloth. “Your Majesty already gave the answer.”

“What?”

“Ten thousand li of mountains and rivers. Countless subjects. Standing above all others.”

Emperor Jianhong said heatedly, “Even if you kill me, you still cannot take this realm!”

“I know.” Liu Yan Sheng remained calm. “But I’m jealous anyway. Jealous that the person who grew up beside me came to rule beneath Heaven while I have to kneel before you every single day. Killing you brings me little benefit, but I hate you. I want you dead. I toss and turn at night and cannot sleep. It harms you without benefiting me at all, but I cannot control myself.”

Emperor Jianhong said, “If I die inside the Grand Commandant’s residence, it cannot remain hidden forever.”

“Which is why I’m doing this personally.”

Liu Yan Sheng slowly raised his blade.

“There is no second person?”

Emperor Jianhong suddenly asked a very strange question.

Liu Yan Sheng said coldly, “Do I need a second person?”

The blade in his hand had only just killed someone. Although he had wiped the blood on the tablecloth, traces still remained. Under the flickering candlelight, the bloody blade radiated a chilling hunger as Liu Yan Sheng faced the emperor and advanced one step at a time.

Emperor Jianhong suddenly sighed.

He raised his hands slightly.

Purple true qi spilled outward in fine strands, winding around the hilt of Liu Yan Sheng’s blade and fixing it firmly in place.

It could neither advance nor retreat.

Liu Yan Sheng yanked at it twice before horror finally appeared on his face.

“Purple Qi Comes from the East?”

Elio’s Notes: “Purple qi comes from the east” (紫气东来) is a classical auspicious expression associated with the arrival of a sage or extraordinary good fortune. Here, it is the name of Emperor Jianhong’s supreme imperial martial art.

Emperor Jianhong said, “The supreme imperial art, Purple Qi Comes from the East. In the past hundred years, I am the only person who has successfully cultivated it. That proves I am the Northern Zhou emperor chosen by Heaven. Otherwise, why do you think the Commandery Prince of Pingluo, who commanded such enormous military strength, chose neither Prince Yunzhong nor Prince Longnan, but supported me alone? What confidence do you think I possessed that allowed me to contend with them?”

Joy and despair flashed alternately across Liu Yan Sheng’s face until his expression twisted beyond control. “You hid it all this time! You let Consort Dowager Chen and Tie Rong Rong lord it over you for so many years, and even Pei Yuan Jin’s sword failed to force you to reveal yourself! You hid yourself well indeed!”

Emperor Jianhong said helplessly, “I simply have too many enemies. If my martial arts were exposed, they would devise even more unpredictable methods to kill me. I have no desire to die too early.”

“But today, you finally failed to keep it hidden.”

“Not necessarily.”

Emperor Jianhong used his true qi to wrench the blade from Liu Yan Sheng’s hand. “Knowing how cautious you are, the people outside today must all be death-sworn men. You prepared long ago. Once you killed me, you intended to kill them as well and silence every witness, then fabricate a story that Yu Shuang Xi assassinated the emperor.”

“So what?”

Emperor Jianhong tossed the blade to the ground and waved a hand, forcing Liu Yan Sheng backward into the corner.

He then walked over to the table and sat down with his legs planted boldly apart.

“Before carrying this out, those death-sworn men must already have taken slow-acting poison. Just like the group you used when you assassinated Prince Longnan. Which means I need do absolutely nothing. As long as I calculate the timing and walk outside afterward, they will already have died ahead of me.”

Liu Yan Sheng knew there was little chance he would survive today, but unwillingness still burned within him. “When you came here today, was it because you trusted me or because you suspected me?”

Emperor Jianhong toyed with the wine cup he had poured earlier.

“I never drank the wine you prepared. What do you think?”

“When did you begin suspecting me?”

“When I discovered that my third son’s death was connected to Tie Rong Rong.”

Confusion appeared on Liu Yan Sheng’s face.

Emperor Jianhong said, “Tie Rong Rong had always been deeply wary of you. Yet now she suddenly dared kill your son. Why was she no longer afraid of you?”

“She was already insane. Or perhaps she thought I would never discover it. That proves nothing!”

“You are correct. Either was possible. So I had someone test you.”

“You had someone test me?” Liu Yan Sheng thought for a moment before his expression abruptly changed. “Tan Du?”

“The Prefect of Jiangling had already been secretly reported to me by Tan Du for colluding with the enemy and betraying the country. I was the one who ordered him to propose replacing your third son with Liu Huan in the marriage alliance with the Fu family.”

Emperor Jianhong looked at him mockingly.

“With your former caution, you would never have agreed. But you did. All your usual humility and restraint were an act. This matter finally exposed the fact that you no longer cared whether I became wary of you.”

“Because you believed I did not have much longer to live.”

Liu Yan Sheng tacitly admitted it, then asked, “Why would Tan Du help you?”

The two brothers had always been extremely close.

Emperor Jianhong laughed with genuine pleasure. “Because I told him I suspected Tie Rong Rong had turned you into a King Puppet. He did not know that King Puppets could retain their own consciousness. He believed you had already become an ordinary puppet.”

“Even if I killed you today, he would only be grateful to me—grateful that I prevented his elder brother’s corpse from continuing to be used by villains, grateful that I preserved the Liu family’s reputation. From that day onward, he would become even more unwaveringly loyal to me.”

“If you must blame someone, blame yourself. You were so afraid your secret would leak that you never told him.”

Just listening to this was enough to make Liu Yan Sheng’s eyes bulge with fury, as though he wished he could murder the emperor with his gaze alone.

Emperor Jianhong stood. “Judging by the time, it should be almost over. Is there anything else you wish to say?”

Liu Yan Sheng asked, “You sent Great Sir to kill Tie Rong Rong?”

“Why do you ask?”

“Then you did not send any experts against the Rong family.” Liu Yan Sheng breathed heavily, his eyes shining with an unsettling brightness. “Yes, the people outside are death-sworn men I arranged, and yes, they will die soon. But I would never leave myself without a backup plan.”

“The Rong family will arrive shortly. We already agreed that he would take the blame for regicide, using it as his pledge of allegiance to the Northern Lands!”

Emperor Jianhong beckoned with one hand.

His true qi dragged Liu Yan Sheng directly in front of him.

“Why tell me?”

Liu Yan Sheng chuckled. “I’m going to die anyway. Seeing you look nervous before I do would still be satisfying.”

Emperor Jianhong sighed. “From childhood until now, you have always been this impatient.”

“So that’s why you never told me you were cultivating Purple Qi Comes from the East?”

Realizing that the greatest flaw in his plan had shown signs as far back as their childhood, yet he had never noticed, Liu Yan Sheng was consumed by rage and regret.

“When did you begin practicing it?”

Emperor Jianhong had no desire to waste any more words on him. “When I was six, I went to a temple to make a wish. You asked me what I wished for. I told you I wanted to become someone like my father.”

“Wasn’t that already telling you I wanted to become emperor?”

“I formed that ambition so early. How could I possibly have spent my time indulging in romance and idle pleasures while my brothers studied literature and martial arts?”

He paused.

“And there is no need to worry. Tie Rong Rong and Rong Yue will both be joining you below very soon.”

The instant he finished speaking, he unleashed sixteen palm strikes!

Only after Liu Yan Sheng had completely stopped breathing did Emperor Jianhong dishevel his own hair and clothes.

Then he flung open the door in apparent panic.

“Protect the emperor! Someone come! Protect the emperor!”
