JB – Chapter 331: Grudges and Resentment

The anonymous person who called the police tip hotline had used a public telephone, so there was no way to trace their identity. Although the caller claimed to be an employee of that company, it was obvious they did not want to reveal who they really were. However, since the target was clearly Wang Ning’an, the other party’s intentions were not difficult to guess.

As for the signature on the contract, modern technology was so advanced these days that signatures could easily be copied or traced. Therefore, Wang Ning’an was ultimately released due to insufficient evidence.

Wang Ning’an decided to return to the company first. Worried that he might suffer further losses, Wang Cheng decided to accompany him together with Chu Yifeng.

The employees at Shenghui had already learned that Wang Ning’an had been taken away for investigation. At first, most people did not believe it, but after Yu Hongming personally appeared and subtly said a few suggestive things to everyone, many began wavering. The general meaning of his words was that he felt deeply pained by the matter and never expected something like this to happen.

Why would the chairman feel heartbroken? Could President Wang really have betrayed the company? No matter how they thought about it, it still seemed impossible. President Wang had absolutely no reason to betray the company. But since the chairman said such things, perhaps there truly was some kind of evidence. Otherwise, why would the police have taken President Wang away?

Just as everyone was about to be successfully brainwashed, Wang Ning’an suddenly returned completely unharmed less than two or three hours later. As a result, everyone once again believed that Wang Ning’an could not possibly have done such a thing.

“President Wang, it’s wonderful that you’re alright.”

Seeing Wang Ning’an return, Peng Yang was extremely happy. He had known all along that President Wang would definitely be fine. Leaking confidential company documents? President Wang came from such a prestigious background—how could he possibly ruin his own reputation for a little bit of money?

“Thank you for your hard work, Peng Yang,” Wang Ning’an said to him.

Peng Yang shook his head. “As long as President Wang can return safely, none of this matters.”

“Then I need you to do one more thing for me. Go to the security room and help me check who entered my office between four and four-thirty in the afternoon on July thirtieth.”

Peng Yang did not ask for the reason and immediately ran off to investigate.

There were no surveillance cameras inside Wang Ning’an’s office itself, but there were cameras in the hallway outside. His office was not somewhere people could casually enter whenever they pleased. Aside from Peng Yang, anyone else entering had to report it beforehand. If Wang Ning’an was absent, Peng Yang would remind them.

The moment Wang Ning’an returned to the company, someone immediately informed Yu Hongming. Soon afterward, someone came to invite Wang Ning’an to Yu Hongming’s office.

Wang Cheng wanted to follow along, but Yu Hongming’s secretary informed them that the chairman only wished to see Wang Ning’an alone. Wang Ning’an felt it was unnecessary to make a fuss, so he told Wang Cheng and Chu Yifeng to wait in his office for the time being. Wang Cheng reluctantly agreed.

However, when Yu Hongming met Wang Ning’an, what he said was completely different from the things he had implied earlier in front of the employees. He stated that he trusted Wang Ning’an and believed someone must have framed him. He even said he would help uncover the real culprit. His attitude appeared extremely sincere—so sincere that anyone unaware of the truth would likely think he was the ideal model boss.

But when Wang Ning’an mentioned resuming work immediately, Yu Hongming suddenly hesitated.

“Ning’an, you know that even if I trust you, the other shareholders in the company won’t necessarily trust you the way I do. Because of this incident, they already have complaints about you. Right now, your suspicions haven’t been fully cleared away yet. If you continue working, I’m worried they’ll object. How about treating this period as a vacation instead? Once the investigation is complete and the police catch the real culprit, you can return to the company then. At that point, no one will have anything left to say. What do you think?”

Wang Ning’an fell silent. After a long pause, he finally said, “So in reality, Chairman, you still don’t trust me, correct?”

“How can you say such a thing? If I didn’t trust you, how could I possibly be sitting here calmly talking to you right now? The leaked confidential documents involved an important pharmaceutical sample and caused the company serious losses. The only reason I’m handling things this way is because I value you as a talent. Otherwise, I could simply suspend you directly,” Yu Hongming immediately replied, showing a trace of displeasure.

Wang Ning’an stared directly at him. “In that case, I suppose I should thank the chairman for his great trust in me.”

Yu Hongming suddenly felt that Wang Ning’an’s gaze carried some hidden meaning. He did not believe Wang Ning’an could have discovered so quickly that he was behind everything. Although Wang Ning’an being released from the police station so quickly had surprised him somewhat, it still fell within expectations. He had never truly believed that this matter alone would be enough to destroy Wang Ning’an.

Thinking this, Yu Hongming immediately spoke in a righteous tone. “There’s no need for thanks. As long as you continue dedicating yourself wholeheartedly to Shenghui in the future, that will already be the greatest repayment to me.”

“Please rest assured, Chairman. I will,” Wang Ning’an replied before standing up to leave. By now, he had already more or less guessed Yu Hongming’s intentions. As for the remaining three percent of shares, he no longer planned to mention them. Even if he brought it up now, Yu Hongming would definitely use this incident as an excuse to delay again. Saying anything would simply be pointless.

“Please rest assured and enjoy your vacation,” Yu Hongming said.

Wang Ning’an merely curled the corner of his lips slightly.

The moment Wang Ning’an left, Yu Hongming’s expression immediately turned cold. At last, this hidden danger had finally been dealt with. Ever since Gu Ping had come looking for him that day, Yu Hongming had considered the matter over and over before ultimately deciding to join forces with him. However, because Wang Ning’an had the Gu family and the Gu Corporation backing him, Yu Hongming would never choose to openly tear things apart with Wang Ning’an no matter what. Yet he also wanted to reclaim the authority Wang Ning’an held in his hands. In the end, Gu Ping had helped him devise this plan. They had prepared for this day for a very long time. Even if the Zheng family or the Chu family stepped in to help, they would never find evidence directly pointing toward them. At most, it would only prove that Wang Ning’an was innocent.

After returning to his office, Wang Ning’an repeated everything Yu Hongming had said to Wang Cheng and Chu Yifeng. Not long after he finished speaking, Peng Yang knocked and entered the office.

“How did it go?” Wang Ning’an asked.

Peng Yang replied, “I asked the security staff in the surveillance room. They said the cameras on this floor just happened to break down that day. Someone came to repair them in the afternoon, but they weren’t fixed until after five o’clock.”

“I understand. You can go out first. I’ll call you again if there’s anything else,” Wang Ning’an said with a nod.

However, Peng Yang did not leave immediately and instead looked somewhat hesitant.

Wang Ning’an noticed this. “What is it?”

Peng Yang said, “President Wang, actually, after hearing you mention what happened that afternoon, I vaguely remembered something. Wasn’t there a client who suddenly came to visit that day and specifically requested to see you? You left your phone in the office, and later I discovered it and brought it to you. But before that, I noticed something strange.”

“What strange thing?”

“I remember that after you left, I was the one who closed your office door. I clearly shut it tightly at the time, but when I later heard your phone ringing and pushed the door open, I discovered it was half-open. So I suspect someone entered during the time you mentioned while I was in the restroom. At the time, a female coworker had accidentally spilled coffee on my pants.”

After hearing Wang Ning’an ask him to investigate the matter, Peng Yang guessed it must be related to Wang Ning’an being taken away by the police, so he carefully recalled everything that had happened that day. Wang Ning’an exchanged a glance with Wang Cheng. After asking several detailed questions, Wang Ning’an instructed Peng Yang to wait outside and said he would call for him again if needed.

“This Yu Hongming really came prepared. Otherwise, how could the surveillance cameras just happen to break on that exact day? He definitely arranged for someone to do it. But, Big Brother, do you really think this Peng Yang can be trusted?” Wang Cheng said, thinking about the phone incident. After all, Peng Yang had been the last person to handle his brother’s phone.

“It probably wasn’t him. Peng Yang is the person in the company who understands my situation the best. He’s the least likely person for Yu Hongming to bribe. Yu Hongming probably doesn’t trust him either. Besides, if we want to verify whether he’s telling the truth, we only need to ask a few other people. And if it really were him, there would be no reason for him to unnecessarily draw suspicion toward himself.”

Chu Yifeng said, “Yu Hongming’s true purpose in framing you was most likely just to reclaim the authority he had handed over to you in a completely justifiable way. If he could conveniently send you to prison in the process, then all the better—killing two birds with one stone. But even if he couldn’t, his objective has already been achieved, and he loses nothing.”

“That’s what I think as well,” Wang Ning’an said.

“Then what do we do now? Yu Hongming has already taken back all the authority you held. If your suspicions aren’t cleared away soon, he’ll have even more excuses to keep you from returning to Shenghui. Wouldn’t all your efforts have been wasted?” Wang Cheng truly did not want Yu Hongming to get away with this so easily.

Chu Yifeng hooked an arm around his neck. “Do you really think your brother is the kind of person who acts without preparation? Since he dared to do this, he definitely calculated long ago that Yu Hongming would eventually discover what he had been doing.”

Wang Cheng elbowed him. “Of course I know that.”

Ever since learning about his older brother’s experience founding a company in Shanhai City, Wang Cheng had later asked Zhang Wu to investigate the real reason behind his brother’s company going bankrupt. Although Sun Jian had left his brother drowning in debt, he was not the true culprit behind the company’s collapse. Later, Zhang Wu told him that Shenghui had actually been responsible. Shenghui had used underhanded methods to swallow up many small companies in Shanhai City, and his brother’s company had been one of them. Even though it had repeatedly clawed its way back from the brink of death, it still could not escape its final fate.

Wang Ning’an’s company had originally been founded together with a friend. That friend had been both his university classmate and roommate, and the two had shared a very close relationship. However, Shenghui used despicable methods to drag his friend into drug addiction and gambling, burying him under enormous debt. In order to repay the debts, the friend emptied out the company’s finances, and after the company went bankrupt, Shenghui smoothly acquired it.

At first, Wang Ning’an had no idea Shenghui had played a role in the matter. It was only after his friend reached a dead end that the truth was finally revealed. Before committing suicide, the friend confessed everything to him and apologized in remorse.

At that time, the person overseeing Shenghui’s branch company had been Yu Hongzhi, Yu Hongming’s son. Yu Hongzhi had been around twenty-one or twenty-two years old then. Wanting to temper his son through experience, Yu Hongming had transferred him to the Shanhai City branch company. But by that point, Yu Hongzhi was already a spoiled playboy willing to use any means necessary in order to gain benefits.
